I’m an FAA Part 107 certified drone pilot, which means I can fly commercially: for your property, your event, your brand or your production. I also shoot and edit the ground footage, so the aerials fit the rest of the video.
What Part 107 means for you
Any drone flight done for a business, paid or not, falls under the FAA’s Part 107 rules, and the pilot needs a Remote Pilot Certificate. The rules cover where and how high you can fly, and how to get permission in controlled airspace — which matters here, because much of Miami, Fort Lauderdale and Tampa sits close to an airport. I check the airspace and request the authorization before the shoot, not on the day.
Where I’ve flown
The clips below are mine: Reno in the snow, the Oregon coast and Cannon Beach, the cliffs of San Francisco, Malibu, St. Thomas in the U.S. Virgin Islands, and Aruba. For Bourbon Beef, a Kentucky ranch, I flew the drone alongside three cameras on the ground during a two-day shoot.
What it’s good for
Property and venues, where the drone shows the place and what’s around it. Events and festivals, for a sense of scale you can’t get from the ground. Brand and travel videos, for the opening shot. Coastlines, which in St. Petersburg, Fort Lauderdale and Miami usually means the water. I plan short, smooth moves before takeoff, so they cut cleanly into the edit.

Do I need a licensed drone pilot?
If the footage is for a business — marketing, a property listing, an event, a client — yes. Those flights fall under Part 107, and the pilot needs an FAA Remote Pilot Certificate.
Can you fly near an airport?
Often, with authorization. Many areas near airports can be approved through the FAA’s LAANC system; others need more notice, and some are off-limits. Send the address and I’ll check it.
Can you fly over a crowd?
Flying over people is restricted under Part 107, so for events I plan the flight around the crowd, not over it.
